Police Employment Opportunities

The Wentzville Police Department is committed to providing the residents, business owners, and visitors with the highest quality officers possible.  This process is the first step in that commitment.

The Wentzville Police Department only accepts applications for employment when there is a current position open.  All employment opportunities are posted on the City of Wentzville's website, Human Resources section.

The application process will be lengthy based on the seriousness and importance and thoroughness of the process. Once the application deadline is reached, the applications are reviewed. Those selected to participate in the process are then emailed/mailed letters advising of the testing date and time. A rejection letter will be emailed/mailed to those not selected to participate in the process.

Patrol and Correction’s candidates will participate in all the below steps of the hiring process, where Communication’s and Record’s candidates, will participate in all but the physical agility test:

Step 1: Physical Agility Test, Written Test, and Integrity Interview. The physical agility test consists of an approximate 200 yard obstacle course.  The course consists of jumping over obstacles, climbing fences, running stairs, and a dummy drag.  Participants should come dressed appropriately in shorts/sweats, t-shirt and tennis shoes. Those who pass the physical ability test will then move on to take the written test. The written test consists of multiple choice and essay questions and takes approximately one hour to complete. If the written test is passed, the participant will then undergo an integrity interview.

Step 2: Panel Interview. Participants that scored high enough in the testing/integrity process, will be contacted to return for a panel interview. The interview usually takes approximately 45 minutes and consists of three to four police department members asking the candidate questions. After the panel interview, the candidate will also be required to complete a test for writing capability. Candidates, who score high enough on the interview and writing test, will then be contacted about a background investigation. Those that do not make it through this step of the process will be emailed/mailed a rejection letter.

Step 3: Background Investigation. The Detective Bureau will contact past employers, neighbors, references, and check social media. A credit check will also be completed. This step in the process will take several weeks. When the process is completed, the candidate will be contacted by email/mail with either a contingency letter/conditional job offer or a rejection letter.

Step 4: Polygraph Exam. Candidates that make it through the background investigation will be contacted to schedule a polygraph exam.  This exam takes approximately three hours.  The results will be compared to previously gathered information.

Step 5: Psychological Exam. The contracted psychologist will contact the candidate to schedule the psychological exam, which takes approximately four to five hours to complete. It takes several weeks for the results to be returned to the Wentzville Police Department and to be compared to the information the candidate previously provided in the background investigation and during the polygraph examination.

Step 6:  Review. All information will be compiled, compared, and considered.  An invitation will be extended for Step 7, if candidates are qualified, or a rejection letter will be emailed/mailed.

Step 7:  Chief's Interview. This is a brief interview with the Chief of Police to discuss the position, expectations, and any lingering questions.

Step 8:  Physical and Drug Screening. The candidate will be contacted to respond for the testing. Once the results of the testing are in, the candidate will be contacted in reference to a start date and obtaining uniforms.
